Peak body welcomes Grampians funding boost

The Great South Coast Group has welcomed news of a $10 million funding boost for a key nature-based tourism project in the Grampians National Park.

The Grampians Peaks Trail – a multi-night trekking experience linking the Grampians' northern reaches with Dunkeld in the south – is poised to become one of Victoria's most significant nature-based tourism experiences, according to Great South Coast Chair Cr Colin Ryan.

Cr Ryan welcomed the Federal Government Budget announcement, which builds upon a $19 million pre-election commitment from the Victorian State Government.

"This project has been a priority for the Great South Coast Group for the past two years," Cr Ryan said.

"When all sections of the trail are operational, it's expected to generate more than 80,000 new visitor nights – that's a huge economic boost to the region."

Cr Ryan said the development would be particularly important for the township of Dunkeld.

"Dunkeld is the fastest growing small town in south west Victoria, but it has had little attention in terms of tourism infrastructure.

"This investment will undoubtedly breathe new life into Dunkeld and many other surrounding towns."

The first section of the Grampians Peaks Trail has already been built in the central area of Halls Gap.

When complete, Cr Ryan said the full trail would be a world-class, long-distance walking experience that showcased the natural and cultural landscapes of the National Park in a sensitive manner.

"There is strong and growing demand for nature-based tourism experiences and we are lucky in our region to have such unspoilt natural areas."

Cr Ryan acknowledged the work of Federal Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan, in advocating for the project.
