Crafty Kids
It’s Sunday afternoon, the kids are ratty and running around, you don’t know what you’ll cook for dinner and you can’t bear a trip to the supermarket like this, not before the work week starts. Cue Messy Church – the solution to most of a young family’s weekend problems.
Since August 2022, Victor Harbor Lutheran Church has run the popular international kids ministry each month, starting at 3:30pm.
Messy Church offers fun interactive activities for kids, all aligned with a biblical theme. This includes a free dinner, or you may make a donation if you wish.
It also finishes at 5:30pm – just enough time to throw the kids in the bath, read a bedtime story and hopefully enjoy a quiet moment at the end of the evening.
Central to the success of Messy Church in Victor Harbor is coordinator Deb Hosking of Back Valley.
“The first night we hosted Messy Church, 170 individuals showed up,” Deb said. “We’ve been told over and over again that we’ve really met a need in the community – which is a great feeling.”
Busy families can come at the end of the weekend and just be together, spend quality time together, learn, play and celebrate being in community.”
Deb said she and the team especially welcome people of grandparent age. “For many young families who attend Messy Church, having positive older role models in their life can fill a really important need when grandparents live far away or are no longer with us,” Deb said.
Messy Church is open to all ages and faith types – you don’t need to be a practising Christian to come along.
