Settling In
Helen Schiller has been retired for 17 years, but since moving to Victor Harbor in 2016, the former nurse and broad-acre farmer from Pinaroo has made it an almost full time job bringing people together and forming a community of friends.
When she’s not volunteering at Messy Church at Victor Harbor Lutheran Church, she’s meeting with the Granite Island Victor Harbor Probus Group.
Helen said it’s through the Probus group that she’s got to know a lot of people she would never have met otherwise.
“We do so much together,” Helen said, “From riding, walking and hiking, to social outings every month.”

Helen said there’s a lot of single people who attend Probus.
“It can be difficult to meet people when you move to a new place and if you don’t have a partner, it can be difficult to find someone to do things with,” Helen said. “This is what makes Probus so good.”
When Helen’s next door neighbour came to Victor Harbor from Alice Springs, Helen invited her to Probus too. She said that it’s one of the best things she’s ever done.
Granite Island Victor Harbor Probus Group meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 10am at Victor Harbor Gospel Centre.
Helen also attends a Coffee ‘n Chat group at Victor Harbor Lutheran Church on the first Thursday of every month, from 9.30am to 11.30am.
All are welcome to attend.
